
Stop the Chipping: Why Infrared Preheating is a Lifesaver for Glass Cutting
Cutting cold glass feels like a gamble every single time. You score the surface, you apply pressure, and you pray. But because that cutting wheel creates so much internal tension, the glass often decides to snap in its own direction. That’s how you end up with those annoying jagged edges and corner breakouts that ruin a perfectly good piece. The trick to fixing this? Heat. Specifically, infrared (IR) preheating. How it actually works Think of it as softening the blow. IR lamps send short-wave radiation right into the glass, which basically relaxes the material at the score line. When the glass is warm, the surface tension drops. Instead of the crack “wandering” and leaving you with a chipped mess, it follows the score line in a straight, clean shot. It just snaps. No drama, no jagged bits. Setting up your gear You can’t just throw any lamp on the line. You need something that hits hard and fast without turning your entire machine frame into an oven. We usually go with quartz halogen lamps. They’re great because they ramp up almost instantly. But here’s the tricky part: you have to find the sweet spot between wattage and distance. If you go too high on the wattage, you can leave a bigger gap between the lamp and the glass, but you risk overshooting the temperature. Get it too hot, and you’re looking at warping or thermal shock. Plus, make sure your cooling system can handle the heat bleed-off, or you’ll burn out your tooling way faster than you’d like. Keeping things running Once it’s set up, the “boring” stuff is what actually saves your skin. First, make sure your voltage is stable. If the power flickers, your temperature swings, and suddenly your chipping rate spikes again. A dedicated controller is the way to go here. And for heaven’s sake, keep the quartz tubes clean. A little bit of dust or a smudge of oil creates a hot spot, and that’s a one-way ticket to a cracked lamp. Keep an eye on them. Replace the lamps before they start to dim, and you’ll keep those edges crisp shift after shift.
