
Keeping Your Bathroom IR Heaters from Shorting Out
Putting infrared lamps in a bathroom is a bit of a gamble if you aren’t careful. You’ve got steam and condensation everywhere, and as we all know, water and electricity are a nightmare pairing. If a bit of moisture finds its way into a live terminal, you’re looking at a ground fault. The secret is all in the seal. You have to make sure there’s a rock-solid barrier between the lamp and the power feed. Picking the right materials Standard quartz tubes just won’t cut it here. I always suggest using specialized insulators at the ends of the lamp to keep the current from jumping over to the metal chassis. And the seal? It has to be airtight. Period. If steam leaks into the lamp head, the whole thing will short out. I usually stick with high-temperature silicone gaskets or ceramic insulators. They don’t fall apart when things get humid, and they keep the voltage where it belongs, even when the air is thick with steam. Dealing with the wiring Most of these systems fail at the connection point. That’s where the trouble starts. To stop that, stay away from exposed terminals. Run your wiring through moisture-proof conduits and use heat-shrink tubing—the kind with the adhesive lining. It creates a permanent, glue-like seal around the pins. This stops “wicking,” which is basically when moisture crawls along the wire insulation right into the electrical contact. It’s a sneaky problem, but the adhesive tubing kills it. The tricky part: Heat vs. Air Here’s the catch. You want a tight seal for safety, but if you seal a lamp too tightly in a small box, the heat has nowhere to go. The internal temperature spikes, and before you know it, you’ve melted your wiring or fried the lamp. It’s a balancing act. You need a housing that keeps the water out (a good IP rating), but you still need enough ventilation so the electronics can breathe. Plus, don’t forget your grounding. Even if you think your insulation is perfect, you still need a dedicated earth ground. That way, if a seal does fail, the RCD trips immediately. It’s the only way to actually sleep soundly knowing a shower environment is safe.
