Ever stepped into a bathroom that felt like a freezer, or worse, one that felt like a sauna the second you turned the light on? That usually happens when someone just grabs a random infrared lamp without thinking about the room size. If you pick the wrong wattage, you’re either shivering in a cold spot or paying for electricity you don’t actually need. The trick is matching the lamp’s power to the actual space you’re standing in.
Which one do you actually need?
If you’ve got a small bathroom—think under 5m²—you don’t need a powerhouse. A 400W to 600W shortwave lamp is usually plenty. These things heat you, not the air, so if you go too heavy here, you’ll feel like you’re being baked alive. For those medium-sized spaces (between 5m² and 12m²), you’ll want to bump it up to 800W or 1200W. But here’s a pro tip: don’t just buy one giant, scorching lamp. It’s much better to wire up two smaller units. It spreads the warmth around the edges of the room and stops you from having one “hot zone” while the rest of the floor stays chilly. If you’re dealing with a massive luxury bath over 15m², you’re looking at 1500W or more.
The trade-off: Speed vs. Your Circuit Breaker
Higher wattage is great because it’s fast. A 1500W lamp hits its peak almost the moment you flip the switch. But there’s a catch. High-wattage lamps pull a lot of current. If your home’s wiring is old or not rated for that kind of load, you’re going to trip your breakers. Definitely double-check your circuit capacity before you install a high-output lamp. It’s a lot easier to check the fuse box now than to deal with a blackout mid-shower.
