Getting Aircraft Markings to Dry Without Ruining the Plane
When you’re drying logos or livery on a plane, you’re basically walking a tightrope. You want it done fast, but you can’t just blast the whole fuselage with heat or you’ll run into some serious trouble. That’s where shortwave infrared (SWIR) comes in. It lets us hit a specific spot with heat and get out before the rest of the plane even notices.
The Trick to “Flash Drying”
It all comes down to the wavelength. We use shortwave IR because it actually sinks into the paint rather than just sitting on the surface. Think of it like this: we’re targeting the solvents inside the coating directly. By tweaking the bandwidth—usually with some specific quartz coatings or filters—we can focus the energy right where the paint needs it. The best part? The aluminum skin doesn’t soak up all that heat. If the metal gets too hot, the panel can warp, and that’s a nightmare nobody wants to deal with.
Timing is Everything
You can’t just flip a switch and hope for the best. You need a high-density IR array paired with a timer that’s actually accurate. We usually set these things up to fire in short, intense bursts. If you leave the lamps on a second too long, you’ll start burning the edges of your stencil or end up with that dreaded “orange peel” texture. The timer has to be perfectly synced with how fast the lamp ramps up. You want that surface to hit the target temperature now, not in ten seconds.
A Few Things to Watch Out For
Here’s the thing: these high-wattage lamps are power-hungry. They pull a lot of current during those bursts, so make sure your wiring can actually handle the load. You don’t want a blown fuse in the middle of a job. And please, watch your distance. Because the heat is so concentrated, being off by just a few centimeters can be the difference between a perfect logo and a scorched piece of paint. Keep your distance sensors calibrated. It’s a small step that saves a lot of heartache.
